Why Distance From Your Panel Changes Your Generator Inlet Price

The farther your generator inlet sits from your electrical panel, the more it costs. That's the short answer. Every extra foot means more wire, more conduit, and more labor. On a short run, ten feet or less, you might pay a few hundred dollars for the inlet and connection. On a long run, fifty feet or more with a finished wall in the way, that same job can climb past two thousand dollars.

Why distance matters so much

An interlock kit or transfer switch install isn't just about the hardware. It's about running wire from the inlet, usually mounted on an exterior wall near your driveway or generator pad, back to the panel. Copper wire isn't cheap, and larger gauge wire for higher amp generators costs more per foot. A 30-amp setup and a 50-amp setup use different wire sizes, so the same distance costs more on a bigger system.

Labor adds up too. An electrician working through open framing in a garage or unfinished basement can run wire fast. That same run through finished drywall, tight crawl spaces, or a slab means cutting, fishing wire, and patching afterward. That's more hours, and more cost.

Typical price ranges

  • Short, easy run in open framing: a few hundred dollars for labor and materials beyond the inlet and switch itself.

  • Medium run, maybe 20 to 30 feet, through some finished wall: several hundred to just over a thousand dollars.

  • Long run, 50 feet or more, finished walls, or needing to go outside and back in: a couple thousand dollars isn't unusual.

These numbers assume your panel already has room and capacity for the interlock or transfer switch. If it doesn't, that's a separate conversation.

Open walls versus finished walls

This is one of the biggest hidden cost drivers. If your panel is in an unfinished garage or basement, the electrician can usually run conduit along studs or joists without much trouble. If the path runs through a finished living space, kitchen, or bedroom wall, expect drywall cuts, possible insulation removal, and patching costs on top of the electrical work. Some homeowners choose to reroute the path outside the house instead, running conduit along the exterior wall. That can cost more in materials but less in demo and patch work. It's worth asking your electrician for both options.

Amp rating changes the math too

A 30-amp inlet for a portable generator costs less to wire than a 50-amp inlet for a larger unit. Bigger wire, bigger conduit, sometimes a bigger breaker slot needed at the panel. If you're planning a whole-home generator down the road, it usually makes sense to size the inlet and wiring for that from the start rather than upgrading twice.

When distance signals a bigger issue

Sometimes a long run from panel to inlet is really pointing at a placement problem. If your panel sits in an inconvenient spot, or if it's already crowded and can't fit a transfer switch cleanly, that's worth flagging before you finalize the inlet location. This is also a good moment to check for other warning signs. Frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, or a 100-amp panel struggling to keep up with modern loads like EV chargers or added appliances often mean a panel upgrade should happen alongside the generator work, not after it. A panel upgrade itself typically runs in the low thousands depending on service size, meter location, and how much coordination with your utility is needed.

Permit and inspection costs

Don't skip this part to save money. Permits and inspections add a modest fee, but they protect you if you sell the home or file an insurance claim later.
