Get your second home's electrical system inspected every 3 to 5 years, or any time before you open it up after a long vacancy. If the place sits empty for months at a time, or you're running it through a hard North Idaho winter unattended, that schedule should move closer to every 2 to 3 years.
Cabins and second homes take a different kind of beating than a house someone lives in every day. Nobody's around to notice a flickering light or a breaker that trips once and gets reset without a second thought. Mice chew wiring in the off season. Moisture gets into junction boxes when nobody's running heat consistently. By the time an owner notices a problem, it's often already caused damage.
Why second homes need a different schedule than full-time houses
A full-time home gets used every day, so problems show up fast. Someone's there to notice the burning smell, the warm outlet, the panel that hums. A second home might sit closed up from October to May. That gap is exactly when rodents, condensation and loose connections do their worst work, unseen.
If you're in Bonner or Kootenai county and your place is a weekend or seasonal property, plan on a walkthrough inspection every time you reopen it for the season, and a full panel and wiring inspection every 3 years. If you rent it out short-term, tighten that to every 2 years, since more people cycling through means more wear on outlets, switches and appliances.
Signs you shouldn't wait for the scheduled inspection
Some problems don't wait for a calendar. Call sooner if you notice:
Breakers that trip repeatedly, especially on the same circuit
Lights that flicker or dim when an appliance kicks on
A panel rated at 100 amps that's original to a home built decades ago
Warm or discolored outlet covers
A burning or fishy smell near the panel or outlets
A 100-amp panel was fine for a cabin with a few lights and a fridge. It's not enough once you add a hot tub, a heat pump, an EV charger or a whole-home generator. Most modern homes with several major appliances need at least 200 amps of service. If your panel is undersized, you'll see the symptoms above long before anything catastrophic happens, so don't ignore them.
What a panel upgrade actually costs
A panel upgrade in North Idaho typically runs in the low thousands of dollars. The exact number depends on:
The size of service you're moving to (100 to 200 amp is common, larger for heavy loads)
Where your meter is located and how much work is needed to relocate or connect it
Coordination with your utility, which can add time even if it doesn't add much cost
Whether walls are open or finished, since finished walls mean more labor to route wire
Permit and inspection fees, which vary by county

Generators, EV chargers and other upgrades that change the math
If you're adding a whole-home generator, plan for a generator inlet, transfer switch or interlock kit as part of the job. That work generally runs from several hundred dollars to around two thousand, depending on how far the generator sits from the panel, whether the wall is open or finished, and the amp rating of your system. Distance from the panel is usually the biggest cost driver, since every extra foot of conduit and wire adds labor.

EV chargers and added appliances are the other common triggers for an upgrade. A single EV charger circuit might be fine on an existing panel with room to spare. Two chargers, a hot tub and a heat pump on a 100-amp panel usually isn't. An inspection will tell you which situation you're in before you spend money on equipment you can't actually run.
What a routine inspection actually covers
A proper inspection checks the panel for corrosion, loose lugs and outdated breakers, tests outlets and GFCI protection, looks at wiring in accessible areas for rodent damage or wear, and confirms your service size still matches your actual load. It's not a long visit, but it catches the kind of problems that turn into expensive repairs or fire risks if left alone through another off season.
