Whole-Home Generator vs. Portable Generator: Which Is Right for Your North Idaho Property?

A whole-home generator is the better choice if you live in your North Idaho property year-round, rely on well water, or can't afford to lose power for days during a winter storm. A portable generator makes more sense for a seasonal cabin, a tight budget, or a backup plan for occasional short outages. Here's how to think through the decision.

What a portable generator actually gives you

A portable generator runs a few circuits at a time. Think refrigerator, some lights, a sump pump, maybe a space heater. You buy the unit, run extension cords or wire in an inlet, and start it manually when the power goes out.

  • Unit cost: roughly $500 to $2,000 depending on size (5,000 to 10,000 watts covers most homes' basics).

  • You have to be home to start it, fuel it, and run it. No power if you're away.

  • Standard gas models need refueling every 8 to 12 hours under load.

  • Storage takes space in a garage or shed, and it needs to be run periodically so it starts when you need it.

Portable units work fine for outages measured in hours. They get harder to manage for outages measured in days, which North Idaho sees during heavy winter storms.

What a whole-home generator actually gives you

A whole-home (standby) generator is permanently installed outside, wired into your electrical panel, and runs on natural gas or propane. It starts on its own within seconds of an outage and can run your whole house, including the furnace, well pump, and appliances, for as long as fuel holds out.

  • Installed cost: typically $8,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on generator size and how much electrical work is involved.

  • No manual start. It kicks on whether you're home or not, which matters for cabins and rental properties.

  • Runs on propane or natural gas, so no trips to the gas station during a storm.

  • Requires an automatic transfer switch, a dedicated pad or mounting pad, and coordination with your utility and local permitting.

For a well-maintained system, this is close to a "forget about it" solution. The tradeoff is upfront cost and the fact that it's a permanent piece of equipment tied to your property.

The electrical work people don't always budget for

Whichever generator you choose, the connection to your home's electrical system matters as much as the generator itself.

  • A basic interlock kit or manual transfer switch for a portable generator runs a few hundred to around $1,500 to $2,000 installed, depending on how far the generator sits from your panel and whether your walls are open or finished.

  • A whole-home system needs an automatic transfer switch, which is a bigger job and usually part of the installed generator price quoted above.

  • If your panel is older or maxed out, you may need a panel upgrade before adding either type of generator. Signs you need one: breakers that trip often, lights that flicker when appliances start, or a 100-amp panel trying to run a modern home with a furnace, well pump, EV charger, and other loads.

  • Panel upgrades typically run in the low thousands, with the exact number driven by amp rating (100 to 200 amp is common), meter location, whether the utility needs to coordinate the swap, and permit and inspection fees.

It's common for a generator project to reveal a panel problem that was already there. Adding a generator, an EV charger, or new appliances all put more demand on a panel that may have been sized for a smaller home decades ago.

Which one fits your situation

  • Full-time North Idaho homeowners: whole-home generator, especially if you're on a well or have health equipment that needs continuous power.

  • Cabin or second-home owners: a whole-home unit is worth it if you can't check on the property often, since it starts automatically even when you're not there. A portable unit works if you visit regularly and can manage it in person.

  • Small businesses: whole-home (or "whole-building") systems protect refrigeration, security systems, and point-of-sale equipment without someone having to physically start a generator.

  • Tight budgets or short-term needs: a portable generator with a proper interlock or inlet is a reasonable middle ground, and it can be upgraded to a permanent system later.

Builders working on new construction in Bonner or Kootenai counties often plan for a generator-ready panel and outdoor connection from the start, which avoids retrofitting walls and conduit later.
