When Should You Upgrade Your Panel Before Adding a New Appliance?

Upgrade your panel before adding a new appliance if your panel is already at or near 100 amps, if you're adding a load over 30-40 amps, or if you're already seeing tripped breakers or flickering lights. Most older homes in Bonner and Kootenai counties were built with 100-amp service. That was fine for a furnace, a well pump, and a stove. It's not enough once you add an EV charger, a hot tub, a heat pump, or a whole-home generator on top of everything else.
Signs your panel is already maxed out
Before you even think about the new appliance, look at how your panel behaves now.
Breakers trip when you run two or three things at once, like a microwave and a space heater.
Lights flicker or dim when the AC or well pump kicks on.
Your panel is rated 100 amps and it's original to a house built before the mid-1990s.
You've already added window units, a hot tub, or shop tools since moving in.
Any one of these means your margin is thin. Adding another major appliance on top could push you into constant nuisance tripping, or worse, an overloaded panel that's a fire risk.
How to check if you have room
Every appliance has an amperage draw, either listed on a spec sheet or on the unit itself. Add up what your panel already carries and compare it to your service size. A rough example:
A 100-amp panel with electric range, dryer, water heater, and central AC is often already running near 70-80 amps of connected load.
An EV charger can pull 30-50 amps by itself.
A whole-home generator transfer switch adds load management but still needs headroom to work with.
A heat pump or mini-split system typically draws 15-30 amps depending on size.
If adding the new number pushes you past what your panel and main breaker can safely handle, you need an upgrade first. This isn't a guess-and-check situation. An electrician can pull your panel's rating and do the math in about 20 minutes.
What triggers most upgrades in North Idaho
We see the same handful of triggers over and over:
EV chargers. A level 2 charger is one of the biggest single loads a house takes on.

New appliances during a remodel. Induction ranges, tankless water heaters, and heat pumps all draw more than what they replaced.
Detached shops and garages. Adding a subpanel out there often reveals the main panel was already tight.
What an upgrade actually costs
A full panel upgrade in this area typically runs in the low thousands of dollars. The exact number depends on a few things:
Service size. Going from 100 amps to 200 amps is the most common jump and the most predictable cost. Going to 400 amps for a large shop or commercial space costs more.
Meter location. If the meter has to move or the service line needs rerouting, that adds labor.
Utility coordination. Avista or your local co-op has to schedule a disconnect and reconnect. That adds time to the project, not usually cost, but it affects your timeline.
Permit and inspection. Required for any service upgrade in Idaho. Budget for it as part of the job, not an extra.
If you only need a generator inlet, interlock kit, or transfer switch without a full panel replacement, that's a smaller job, usually a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on how far the generator connection is from the panel and whether your walls are open or finished. Finished walls mean more cutting and patching, which adds labor hours.
When you can skip the upgrade
Not every new appliance needs a panel upgrade. If your panel is 150 or 200 amps, has open breaker slots, and your current load is well under capacity, you may just need a new circuit run from the existing panel. That's a much smaller job. The key is knowing your actual headroom instead of guessing. A panel that looks full of breakers isn't the same as a panel that's electrically full. Sometimes there's room to add a tandem breaker or reorganize circuits without any service upgrade at all.
Plan around winter, not during it
