When Should a Small Business in Kootenai County Upgrade Its Electrical Service?

Upgrade your electrical service when your panel can't keep up with what you're actually running. That means breakers that trip weekly, a 100-amp panel trying to feed modern equipment, or plans to add a generator, EV charger, or new machinery. If any of that sounds familiar, it's time to call an electrician for an assessment before something fails during business hours.

The clearest warning signs

Most small business owners in Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls, and Hayden don't think about their electrical panel until it starts causing problems. Watch for these:

  • Breakers trip more than once a month. A single overloaded circuit is normal once in a while. Repeated trips mean the panel is undersized for your load.

  • Lights flicker or dim when equipment starts up. Compressors, HVAC units, and kitchen equipment draw a surge on startup. If your lights dip every time, your service is working too hard.

  • You have a 100-amp panel. That was fine for a small shop decades ago. It's tight for most businesses today, especially anything with commercial kitchen gear, multiple HVAC zones, or server equipment.

  • Panel upgrade: Typically runs in the low thousands. The final number depends on the size of service you need, where your meter is located, and how much coordination is required with your utility.

  • Generator-ready setup (inlet, interlock, or transfer switch): Usually several hundred to a couple thousand dollars, depending on which option you choose and how far the equipment needs to run from the panel.

The biggest cost drivers on any job are the distance from the panel to the new equipment, whether you're working with open walls or finished ones, the amp rating you're upgrading to, and permit and inspection requirements. A panel behind drywall in a finished office costs more to access than one in an open mechanical room. Kootenai County requires permits for panel work, and inspections add a few days to the timeline, but skipping that step isn't worth the risk to your insurance or your tenants.

Honest tradeoffs

Not every business needs a full service upgrade. Sometimes a subpanel or a few dedicated circuits solves the problem for less money. A licensed electrician should look at your actual load, not just guess based on the age of your panel.
