What Drives the Cost of an Electrical Panel Upgrade? 5 Key Factors

A panel upgrade in North Idaho typically runs in the low thousands of dollars. Where you land in that range depends mostly on five things: the size of service you're moving to, where your meter sits, how much wall work is involved, permit and inspection requirements, and how much your utility needs to coordinate on their end.
Here's what actually moves the price.
1. Service Size: 100-Amp to 200-Amp (or Higher)
Most older homes in Bonner and Kootenai counties were built with 100-amp service. That was fine in 1985. It's tight now. Adding an EV charger, a hot tub, a heat pump, or a whole-home generator pushes many households past what 100 amps can safely carry.
Jumping to 200-amp service is the most common upgrade we do, and it's usually the base cost driver. Some larger homes, shops, or properties with multiple outbuildings need 320-amp or even 400-amp service, which costs more in equipment and labor. The bigger the amp rating, the bigger the panel, the bigger the wire, and often the bigger the meter base too.
2. Meter Location and Distance From the Panel
If your meter and panel are close together, on the same exterior wall, the job is straightforward. If they're far apart, or the meter is in a hard-to-reach spot, an electrician has to run new conductors between them. Every extra foot of wire, every corner around a foundation, every spot where we have to trench or drill through masonry adds labor time and material cost.
Cabin and second-home owners see this a lot. Older cabins sometimes have meters mounted in odd locations from decades of piecemeal additions. That distance shows up directly in the bid.
3. Open Walls vs. Finished Walls
If your panel is in an unfinished basement or garage with exposed studs, an electrician can access wiring easily. If it's buried behind finished drywall, tile, or built-in cabinetry, expect more cost. Cutting into finished walls, fishing wire, and patching afterward all add time. This is one of the more variable line items, because it depends entirely on how your specific home was built and finished.
4. Permits, Inspection, and Utility Coordination
Every panel upgrade in this region requires a permit and an inspection. That's not optional and it's not a place to cut corners, since an uninspected panel can cause problems later with insurance or resale. Permit fees are a smaller piece of the total cost, but they're real and should be in any honest quote.
The bigger variable is utility coordination. Upgrading service size often means the utility has to disconnect and reconnect power, sometimes upgrade the transformer or drop, and schedule that work around their own crews. This can add days or weeks to a project timeline, even if it doesn't add huge cost. It's worth asking your electrician upfront how they handle utility scheduling, because that's often the part homeowners aren't expecting.
5. What's Triggering the Upgrade
The reason you need the upgrade shapes the scope. A few common triggers:

EV chargers. A Level 2 charger alone might not require a full panel upgrade if you have capacity to spare, but many 100-amp homes don't.
Added appliances. Electric ranges, added HVAC, hot tubs, or shop equipment all add load that an old panel wasn't sized for.
Warning signs. Frequent breaker trips, flickering lights when appliances kick on, and a panel that just feels maxed out are all signals worth having checked before they become a bigger problem.
If you're adding a generator interlock or transfer switch as part of the project, that's a separate cost on top of the panel itself, usually a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the switch type and how far it sits from the panel. Getting an Honest Number
