Spring Storm Season: Is Your North Idaho Home Ready for Power Outages?

If your lights flicker every time the wind picks up, or a breaker trips when you run the microwave and a space heater together, your electrical system is telling you something. Spring storms in Bonner and Kootenai counties knock down trees, snap lines, and cause outages that last anywhere from a few hours to several days. The time to fix weak spots is before the storm, not during it.

Signs your panel can't handle spring storm season

A lot of North Idaho homes, especially older cabins and farmhouses, still run on 100-amp panels. That was fine decades ago. It's not fine now with electric ranges, heat pumps, well pumps, and EV chargers all pulling from the same box. Watch for these signs:

  • Breakers trip when you run two or three appliances at once

  • Lights dim or flicker when the fridge or well pump kicks on

  • The panel is warm to the touch or has a burning smell

  • You're adding a generator, EV charger, or new appliance and the panel has no room left

Any one of these means your panel is maxed out or on its way there. A panel upgrade typically runs in the low thousands of dollars, depending on the amp rating you're moving to, where the meter sits, and how much coordination is needed with the utility. A straightforward swap from 100 to 200 amps costs less than a job that also requires moving the meter or trenching new service conductors. Ask for a firm quote before work starts, because "it depends" pricing without a number attached usually means surprises later.

Generator readiness: the part people skip

A lot of homeowners buy a portable generator, plug it into extension cords during an outage, and call it good. That works in a pinch, but it's not code-compliant and it's not safe if you're backfeeding power into your home's wiring without a transfer switch. A proper setup means either:

  • A generator inlet box wired into a transfer switch, letting you safely power selected circuits from a portable unit

  • An interlock kit on the panel, which is a cheaper option that locks out the main breaker while the generator breaker is on

  • A whole-home standby generator with an automatic transfer switch, which kicks in within seconds of an outage

Inlet and interlock setups usually run a few hundred to around two thousand dollars installed. The big cost drivers are how far the generator will sit from the panel, whether your walls are open or finished (finished walls mean more drywall repair), the amp rating of the interlock or inlet, and permit and inspection fees. Standby units cost more but run automatically, which matters if you travel or own a second home that sits empty for weeks at a time.

What triggers most upgrade calls

We see the same patterns every spring. Someone adds a whole-home generator and finds out their panel doesn't have room for the transfer switch breaker. Someone installs an EV charger and trips breakers weekly because the panel was already near capacity. Someone finishes a basement or adds a shop and the new circuits push an old 100-amp service past its limit. If any of this sounds familiar, it's worth getting the panel looked at now, before storm season, rather than during an emergency call when contractors are booked solid.

Cabin and second-home owners: don't skip this

If your place sits empty part of the year, a power outage can go unnoticed until pipes freeze or a sump pump fails. A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch is worth the extra cost here, since nobody's around to start a portable unit. If you already went through a generator setup for winter, most of that same wiring holds up fine for spring, but it's worth a quick check after months of cold and snow load on your electrical connections. Honest tradeoffs to think through

  • A panel upgrade costs more upfront than patching around an undersized one, but it stops the cycle of tripped breakers and opens the door for EV chargers or generators later.

  • An interlock kit is cheaper than a transfer switch but requires you to manually flip breakers during an outage, which isn't ideal if you're not physically able to get to the panel easily.

  • A whole-home standby generator costs the most but needs the least effort from you when the power actually goes out.

There's no universal right answer. It depends on your budget, how often you lose power, and whether you're home when it happens.
