Portable Generator Inlet vs. Whole-Home Standby: Cost and Convenience Compared

A portable generator inlet with an interlock or manual transfer switch costs several hundred dollars to about two thousand installed. A whole-home standby system costs eight thousand to twenty thousand dollars or more once you add the generator, automatic transfer switch, gas line, and often a panel upgrade. If your budget is tight and you can be home to manage an outage, the inlet gets you most of the benefit for a fraction of the price. If you want power to come back on while you're at work or asleep, standby is the only option that does that.

What a Portable Generator Inlet Actually Gets You

This setup is a locking inlet on your house, wired to either an interlock kit on your main panel or a manual transfer switch with a handful of dedicated circuits. When the power drops, you roll out a generator, plug it in, flip breakers, and you're running your fridge, well pump, furnace blower, and a few outlets.

  • Interlock kit: typically $500 to $1,200 installed, gives you access to your whole panel one circuit at a time

  • Manual transfer switch: typically $1,000 to $2,000 installed, pre-wired for 6 to 10 chosen circuits

  • Generator itself: $600 to $2,500 for a portable unit in the 5,000 to 10,000 watt range

Cost swings on distance from the panel, whether your walls are open or finished, and the amp rating of the inlet. A detached shop or a finished basement wall adds labor. Permit and inspection fees are usually modest but they're required, since this connects to your home's wiring.

What Whole-Home Standby Buys You

A standby system sits outside on a pad, runs on natural gas or propane, and starts itself within seconds of an outage through an automatic transfer switch. No hauling equipment, no extension cords, no waking up at 2 a.m. to restart anything. For cabin owners who aren't on-site every week, this is often the deciding factor. Nobody has to drive out in a snowstorm to keep pipes from freezing.

  • Generator and pad: $5,000 to $12,000 depending on size, 10kW to 24kW covers most homes

  • Automatic transfer switch and wiring: $1,500 to $3,500

  • Gas line run and permit: varies a lot by distance from the meter, often $500 to $2,000

Add it up and most North Idaho homes land between $9,000 and $18,000 fully installed. Larger homes or long gas line runs push past that.

The Panel Upgrade Question

Both options can trigger a panel upgrade, and this is where costs surprise people. If your home still has a 100-amp panel, it may not have room for a generator interlock, let alone the extra load of a whole-home unit alongside modern additions like an EV charger or a heat pump. Signs you're already due for an upgrade include breakers that trip under normal use, lights that flicker when the fridge or well pump kicks on, and a panel that's simply too small for what the house runs today. Convenience, Honestly Compared

A portable setup asks something of you every time the power goes out. You need fuel on hand, a place to store the generator, and the willingness to go outside in bad weather to set it up. That's a real cost even if it's not a dollar figure. Standby systems test themselves weekly and start automatically, so the only ongoing task is an annual service check and keeping the propane tank filled if that's your fuel source.

For full-time residents who are usually home and comfortable with a bit of manual work, portable is a reasonable long-term choice. For second-home owners, small businesses that can't afford downtime, or anyone with medical equipment in the house, standby earns its higher price.

Long-Term Value

Portable generators wear out faster since they're not built for continuous duty, and you'll likely replace the unit itself every 8 to 12 years with moderate use. Standby generators are built for outdoor duty cycles and commonly last 15 to 20 years with regular maintenance. When you factor in replacement costs, the price gap between the two options narrows over a 15-year window, even though the upfront gap is large.
