Planning a Hot Tub or Sauna? Here's Why Your Panel Matters

Short answer: if your panel is 100 amps and already has a well pump, electric range, and a shop or garage circuit, adding a hot tub or sauna will likely push you over what that panel can safely handle. A 240-volt hot tub can draw 30 to 60 amps on its own. A sauna heater often needs a dedicated 30 to 50 amp circuit. That is a big bite out of a panel that may already be maxed out.

We see this a lot in Bonner and Kootenai counties. Cabins built in the 80s and 90s came with 100-amp service because that was enough for lights, a fridge, and a well pump. Now people want a hot tub on the deck, a sauna in the garage, an EV charger, maybe a generator. The math stops working.

Signs your panel is already maxed out

Before you even add a hot tub, some homes are already showing strain. Watch for:

  • Breakers that trip when you run the dryer and microwave at the same time

  • Lights that flicker or dim when the well pump kicks on

  • A panel labeled 100 amps that's from the original build with no room for new breakers

  • A double-tapped breaker or a panel that's physically full, no open slots

Any one of these is a sign your panel is undersized for modern loads, even before you add a spa.

What a hot tub or sauna actually needs

Most hot tubs need a dedicated 240-volt circuit, usually 30 to 60 amps depending on the model and how many pumps and heaters it runs. That circuit needs its own breaker and often a GFCI disconnect near the tub. Saunas vary. A small electric sauna heater might only need 30 amps, but larger cabin-style units can need 50.

Either way, this is not something you plug into an existing outlet. It needs its own circuit run from the panel, sized correctly, and installed to code. If your panel has no open breaker slots or not enough amperage headroom, that circuit cannot go in without upgrading the panel first.

When a panel upgrade is actually required

You'll likely need to go from 100 amps to 150 or 200 amps if:

  • You're adding a hot tub or sauna to a home that already has an electric range, well pump, and standard household loads

  • You're also planning an EV charger or whole-home generator in the next few years

  • Your panel is already full or has no amperage headroom on paper

  • Your utility company flags the service as undersized when you pull a permit

Not every hot tub install triggers a full panel upgrade. If you have a newer 200-amp panel with open breaker slots and light household load, you might just need the new circuit. But if you're on an older 100-amp service, plan on the upgrade being part of the job.

What it actually costs

Panel upgrades in North Idaho typically run in the low thousands, and the exact number depends on a few things:

  • Service size: going from 100 to 200 amps costs more than 100 to 150

  • Meter location: if the meter base needs to move or upgrade too, that adds labor

  • Utility coordination: Avista or your local co-op has to disconnect and reconnect service, and that scheduling affects timeline more than cost

  • Permit and inspection: required by code, and skipping this step causes problems later, which we cover in our post on permit shortcuts and panel upgrades

If you're also adding a generator inlet, interlock kit, or transfer switch alongside the panel work, that's typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars more, depending on whether you want manual or automatic transfer. Cost drivers worth knowing about

Two homes with the same panel upgrade can have very different bills. What changes the price:

  • Distance from the panel to the hot tub or sauna location, longer wire runs cost more

  • Open walls versus finished walls, running wire through finished drywall or log construction takes more labor

  • The amp rating you're upgrading to, 200 amp service costs more than 150

  • Whether the meter base needs replacing along with the panel

If you're building a new cabin or renovating an older one, it's worth sizing the panel for what you actually want in five years, not just what you need today. Adding 200-amp service now costs less than upgrading twice.

Honest tradeoffs

A panel upgrade is not cheap, and it's fair to ask if you really need it. If you're only adding a small plug-in spa with a low amp draw and your panel has room, you might get away without one. But if you're combining a hot tub with any future plans for an EV charger, generator, or shop addition, upgrading the panel once now saves you from paying for permits, inspections, and utility coordination twice.
