Opening Up Your North Idaho Cabin? Check These Electrical Items First

Before you flip the main breaker on a cabin that's sat empty all winter, walk through five things: the panel, outlets near water, the generator setup, smoke and CO detectors, and any signs mice got into your wiring. Skipping this costs a lot more than the twenty minutes it takes to check.
North Idaho cabins take a beating between visits. Freeze and thaw cycles move wires. Rodents chew insulation. Moisture gets into boxes and panels you thought were sealed. None of this shows up until you load the system back up, and that's usually the worst time to find out something's wrong.
Start at the panel
Open the panel cover before you do anything else. Look for rust streaks, water stains, or a burnt smell. Scorch marks around any breaker mean that circuit has been overheating. That's not a "keep an eye on it" problem, that's a call-someone-now problem.
A lot of older cabins in Bonner and Kootenai counties still run on 100-amp panels. That was fine in 1985. It's tight today if you've added a hot tub, a well pump, an EV charger, or a whole-home generator since then. Signs you're outgrowing your panel include breakers that trip for no clear reason, lights that flicker when the fridge or well pump kicks on, and a panel that's already maxed out on open slots. A panel upgrade to 150 or 200 amps typically runs in the low thousands of dollars, depending on your service size, where your meter sits, and how much coordination is needed with your utility. Test every GFCI outlet
Kitchens, bathrooms, decks, and anything near the lake or a hose bib should have GFCI protection. Press the test button on each one. If it doesn't trip and reset, the outlet isn't protecting you anymore, even if the power still works. Replace it before anyone plugs in a hair dryer or a space heater.
Check for rodent damage
Mice love a quiet cabin all winter, and they love chewing on wire insulation even more. Look in crawlspaces, attics, and anywhere wiring runs through unfinished framing. Chewed insulation, droppings near junction boxes, or a nest close to any electrical run means you need a closer look before you turn things back on. Exposed copper next to dry wood and a warm panel is how cabin fires start.
Get your generator ready, not just plugged in
If your cabin relies on a portable or standby generator, don't just haul it out and run an extension cord through a window. That's a fire risk and it can backfeed the utility line, which is dangerous for anyone working on the grid. A proper interlock kit or transfer switch keeps your generator and utility power from ever fighting each other. Costs run from a few hundred dollars for a basic interlock to around two thousand for a full transfer switch setup, mainly depending on the distance from your panel, whether your walls are open or finished, and your amp rating. Don't skip the detectors
Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors with batteries drain over a winter of freezing temperatures, even the sealed ten-year units. Test every one. If your cabin uses a generator or wood stove, put a CO detector on every level, not just near the bedrooms.
What can wait, what can't
Some things are fine to schedule for later in the season:
Adding extra outlets to a shop or garage
Upgrading light fixtures for looks rather than safety
Running a dedicated circuit for a future hot tub
Some things can't wait:
Any scorch marks, burning smell, or warm cover plates
A GFCI that won't trip
Chewed wiring anywhere in the cabin
A generator hooked up without an interlock or transfer switch
