Interlock Kit vs. Automatic Transfer Switch: Which Fits Your Budget?

An interlock kit costs less upfront, usually $500 to $1,200 installed. An automatic transfer switch costs more, usually $2,000 to $5,000 installed, but it runs your generator without you touching the panel. Which one fits depends on your budget, how often you lose power, and whether you want to manage the switch yourself during a storm.

What each one actually does

An interlock kit is a metal bracket that gets added to your main panel. It physically blocks you from running utility power and generator power at the same time. When the power goes out, you shut off your main breaker, flip on the generator breaker, and start your portable generator. It works, but you have to be home and awake to do it.

An automatic transfer switch (ATS) does that job for you. It senses when utility power drops, disconnects your home from the grid, and starts a standby generator within seconds. No breakers to flip, no cord to drag outside. This is the setup that goes with whole-home standby generators, the kind that run on propane or natural gas and kick on whether you're home or not.

Cost breakdown

Here's roughly what North Idaho homeowners pay for each option, based on typical panel setups in Bonner and Kootenai counties:

  • Interlock kit parts: $150 to $350, depending on panel brand and amp rating

  • Interlock kit labor and inlet: $350 to $850, more if the inlet has to run through a finished wall or the panel is far from where the generator sits

  • ATS unit: $500 to $1,200 for the switch itself, sized to match your panel

  • ATS labor and wiring: $1,500 to $3,800, since it involves rerouting circuits and usually a dedicated generator pad or hookup

  • Permit and inspection: $75 to $250 in most cases, required for either option since you're modifying the electrical panel

The biggest cost swing for both is distance from the panel to where the generator sits and whether your walls are open or finished. A garage panel with an outdoor wall six feet away is cheap to wire. A panel in a finished basement with the generator pad on the far side of the house costs more in labor, sometimes double.

The honest tradeoffs

Interlock kits work well if you own a portable generator and don't mind manual startup. They're a good fit for cabins and second homes that sit empty part of the year, since there's no standby generator to run all winter waiting for an outage. The downside is timing. If the power goes out at 2 a.m. in a January storm, someone has to go outside, hook up the generator, and flip the interlock. That's not ideal if you're older, if you travel a lot, or if pipes freeze fast in your area.

ATS setups cost more but they remove the human step. If you've already got a whole-home generator, or you're planning to add one, the ATS is part of that package, not really optional. When a panel upgrade gets added to the job

Sometimes the switch isn't the only cost. If your panel is still rated at 100 amps and you're running a modern home with an electric range, a heat pump, and maybe an EV charger, you may not have room for the extra breaker an interlock or ATS needs. Signs you're in this spot: breakers trip more than they used to, lights flicker when the well pump or a dryer kicks on, or your electrician tells you flat out the panel is full.

A panel upgrade in North Idaho typically runs from the low thousands, depending on service size, where your meter sits, and how much coordination is needed with your utility. It's an added cost, but it's also usually a one-time fix that makes room for the generator hookup and anything else you add later, like an EV charger or a second heat pump.

How to decide

  • If you own a portable generator already and outages are occasional, an interlock kit is the cheaper, practical choice

  • If you're installing a whole-home standby generator, budget for the ATS since it's part of that system

  • If your panel is older or already maxed out, price the panel upgrade before you price the switch, since it changes your total budget
