How to Prepare Your Home for a Whole-House Generator Installation

Before a whole-house generator shows up at your door, your electrical panel and site need to be ready for it. That means checking your panel's capacity, picking a spot for the generator and transfer switch, and lining up permits with your utility. Skip any of these steps and you risk delays, extra costs, or a system that can't actually run your whole house.

Start with your electrical panel

Your panel is the foundation of the whole setup. If you're still running a 100-amp panel, it's probably too small for a modern home with a generator, an EV charger, or a heat pump added on top.
