How to Choose the Right Generator Inlet Location for Your Home

The best generator inlet location is the one closest to your electrical panel with a clear, short path through open framing or an easy exterior wall. Every extra foot of wire, every stud bay you have to open up, and every corner you route around adds labor and material cost. Get the location right and a straightforward interlock or transfer switch job runs several hundred dollars to around two thousand. Get it wrong and you can add hours of labor just moving wire from point A to point B.
Start With Distance From the Panel
Distance is the single biggest cost driver on most inlet installs. If your panel sits on an exterior wall, you may only need a foot or two of conduit to punch through to the outside and mount the inlet box right there. That's a half-day job for most electricians.
If your panel is buried in a basement, a mechanical room, or on the far side of the house from where you want to park a portable generator, you're looking at running wire through joist bays, around ductwork, or up through finished ceilings. Every 10 feet of additional run adds time, and if that run crosses finished drywall instead of open framing, add more time for patching and repair.
Open Framing vs. Finished Walls
This is where a lot of homeowners get surprised by a quote. Running new circuit wire through an unfinished basement, crawlspace, or garage is fast work. Running the same wire through finished living space means cutting drywall, fishing wire, and patching afterward. That patch work often costs more than the electrical labor itself.
If you have a choice between two reasonable inlet locations, pick the one that lets the electrician stay in open framing as much as possible, even if it means the inlet ends up a little farther from where you'd ideally park the generator.
Match the Inlet to Your Amp Rating
A 30-amp inlet works fine for a portable generator running a handful of circuits: well pump, refrigerator, a few lights, maybe a furnace blower. A 50-amp inlet gives you more headroom for a larger portable or a small whole-home setup. If you're planning a true whole-home standby generator, you're often looking at 100 amp or larger service, which changes the wire gauge, the conduit size, and sometimes the location itself because the equipment needs more clearance.
Don't oversize just to be safe. A bigger amp rating means thicker wire, larger conduit, and a higher material cost for capacity you may never use. Match the inlet to the loads you actually plan to run during an outage.
Exterior Placement and Code Clearances
The inlet box has to sit outside, and it needs clearance from windows, doors, and dryer vents. Most jurisdictions in Bonner and Kootenai counties also want a minimum distance from the meter and from any gas service equipment. Your electrician will know the local requirements, but here's the practical version: pick a wall section that's away from foot traffic, away from where snow piles up off the roofline, and close enough to where you'll actually run your generator that the cord isn't crossing a walkway or driveway.
Snow load matters more here than in a lot of places. An inlet mounted too low can get buried or iced over every winter, which defeats the purpose of having it ready when you need it. Mount it high enough to clear typical snowpack in your area, and think about roof runoff before you settle on a wall.
Permit and Inspection
Most generator inlet and transfer switch installs require a permit and inspection, since you're tying new equipment into your electrical panel. This isn't a place to skip steps. An unpermitted inlet can cause problems when you sell the house, and more importantly, it can create a backfeed hazard if the interlock or transfer switch isn't installed correctly. Permit and inspection costs are usually built into the overall project quote, and they're a small price for confirming the work is safe.
When the Inlet Decision Connects to a Bigger Upgrade
Sometimes the inlet location conversation turns into a panel conversation. If your home still has a 100-amp panel and you're adding a whole-home generator, an EV charger, or several new appliances, the panel itself may not have room for the extra breaker space or capacity you need. That's common in older North Idaho homes built before modern electrical loads were the norm. If a panel upgrade is already on the table, it's worth planning the inlet location at the same time so you're not paying for two separate mobilizations.

The Honest Tradeoff
The cheapest inlet location and the most convenient one aren't always the same spot. A wall right next to your panel might be on the wrong side of the house from your driveway, meaning you're dragging a generator around the yard every time the power goes out. A wall near the driveway might mean a longer wire run and a higher labor bill. There's no universal right answer here, just a tradeoff between upfront cost and everyday convenience that only you can weigh for your own property.
