How North Idaho Winters Put Extra Strain on Your Electrical Panel

Winter adds real load to your electrical panel. Space heaters, block heaters, well pumps running longer, heat tape on pipes, and a furnace blower that cycles all night all pull power at the same time. If your panel is already old or undersized, cold weather is what finally pushes it past its limit.
This is why panel problems tend to show up in December and January, not July. The panel was fine all summer. Then the temperature drops, everyone plugs in a space heater, and breakers start tripping.
Why cold weather is harder on your panel
Electrical demand in North Idaho homes roughly doubles in winter compared to summer. Heat is the biggest reason. Electric baseboard heat, heat pumps in defrost mode, and portable heaters all draw steady current for hours at a time. Add a hot tub, a well pump, and holiday lighting, and a panel that was adequate in July gets asked to do a lot more in January.
Older panels, especially 100-amp panels installed decades ago, were sized for a much smaller electrical load. Homes back then didn't have electric ranges, EV chargers, hot tubs, and multiple space heaters running at once. A 100-amp panel that was fine in 1985 is often undersized for how people actually use electricity now.
Signs your panel is struggling
Breakers trip more often once the weather turns cold, especially in rooms with space heaters
Lights flicker or dim when the furnace, well pump, or a heater kicks on
The panel feels warm to the touch or you notice a burning smell near it
You have a 100-amp panel and modern appliances, an EV, or a hot tub
You're adding a generator, EV charger, or shop and the panel has no open breaker slots
Any one of these on its own might not mean much. Two or three together, especially in winter, usually means the panel is being pushed harder than it was built for.
What a panel upgrade actually costs
Most panel upgrades in Bonner and Kootenai counties run in the low thousands of dollars. Where you land in that range depends on a few things:
Service size. Moving from 100 amps to 200 amps costs more than a straight swap at the same amperage.
Meter location. If the meter base needs to move or be upgraded too, that adds labor and material.
Utility coordination. Avista or your local co-op has to disconnect and reconnect service, and scheduling that can affect timeline more than cost.
Wall access. Open framing is cheaper to work in than finished walls that need to be cut and patched.
Permit and inspection. This is a fixed cost, but it protects you. Skipping it can cost far more later, which we cover in our post on permits and panel upgrades.
The distance between the panel and the meter, and whether walls are open or finished, tend to move the price more than anything else. A straightforward upgrade in an unfinished basement costs less than one where drywall has to come down and go back up.
What usually triggers the upgrade
Most panel upgrades we see aren't planned years in advance. They happen because someone wants to add a whole-home generator, install an EV charger, add a hot tub, or finish a basement with new circuits. The existing panel has no room left, or it's rated too low to handle the new load safely.
Generators are a common one in this area, given how often winter storms knock out power. If you're adding a generator, you'll also need an interlock kit or transfer switch, which typically runs several hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the setup. What to do before winter hits
If you're already seeing tripped breakers or flickering lights, don't wait for a cold snap to make it worse. Have the panel inspected before you're relying on space heaters and a stressed system at the same time. An honest look at your panel's condition and capacity tells you whether you need a full upgrade or just some smaller fixes.
