How Much Does It Cost to Add a 220-Volt Outlet in North Idaho?

Adding a single 220-volt outlet in North Idaho usually costs between $250 and $800 if your panel already has room and capacity. If your panel is maxed out or outdated, the real cost is the panel upgrade that comes with it, and that can run $2,000 to $4,000 or more.

Here's the honest breakdown so you know what you're actually paying for.

What a Simple 220-Volt Outlet Costs

If your electrical panel has an open slot and enough capacity, running a new 220-volt (240-volt) circuit for a dryer, range, welder, or shop tool is a straightforward job. Expect to pay:

  • $250 to $450 for a short run, panel to outlet within 10-15 feet, in an open wall or unfinished basement/garage

  • $450 to $800 for a longer run, finished walls that need patching, or a location on the opposite side of the house from the panel

The price covers the breaker, wire, outlet, box, permit, and inspection. Idaho code requires a permit for new circuits, and that's not optional even for a single outlet.

What Drives the Price Up

A few things push a simple job into a bigger number:

  • Distance from the panel. Every extra 10 feet of wire, especially through framing, joists, or a crawlspace, adds labor time.

  • Finished vs. open walls. Fishing wire through drywall or log construction takes longer than running it through an open stud bay or unfinished basement.

  • Amp rating. A 30-amp outlet for a dryer is cheaper than a 50-amp outlet for a range or a 60-amp circuit for an EV charger. Higher amperage means thicker wire and a bigger breaker.

  • Permit and inspection. Bonner and Kootenai counties both require permits for new circuits. This is a flat cost, usually built into your quote, and it protects you if you ever sell the house.

When You Also Need a Panel Upgrade

This is where most of the real cost comes from, and it's the most common surprise for homeowners. If you have a 100-amp panel, especially one installed decades ago, adding a 220-volt EV charger or a new appliance can push it past what it can safely handle.

Signs your panel can't take one more 220-volt circuit:

  • Breakers trip frequently, even without adding new loads

  • Lights flicker or dim when large appliances kick on

  • Your panel is rated 100 amps and you're already running electric heat, a well pump, or multiple large appliances

A panel upgrade to 150 or 200 amps typically runs in the low thousands, depending on your service size, where your meter is located, and how much coordination is needed with your utility (Avista or Kootenai Electric, depending on where you're at). EV Chargers Specifically

Level 2 EV chargers need a dedicated 220-volt circuit, usually 40 or 50 amps. If your garage is close to your panel and you have capacity, this looks a lot like the simple outlet job above, closer to $400-$700. If your garage is detached or on the far side of the house, or if you need a panel upgrade first, total cost climbs into the $2,000-$5,000 range once everything is included.

Generator Inlets and Transfer Switches

If you're adding a 220-volt outlet as part of generator prep rather than for an appliance, the pricing is a little different. A generator inlet box with an interlock runs several hundred dollars. What Homeowners Should Ask For

  • Does my panel have capacity for this new circuit?

  • Is the price quoted with or without permit and inspection?

  • What's the amp rating I actually need for my appliance or charger?

A contractor who answers these clearly, before showing up, is one who's done this job many times.
