How Much Does an Electrical Panel Upgrade Cost in North Idaho?

A standard electrical panel upgrade in North Idaho runs from about $2,200 to $4,500 for most homes. That covers swapping an old 100-amp panel for a new 200-amp panel, new breakers, grounding upgrades, and the permit. Larger services, tricky meter locations, or a panel that has to move to a new spot can push the job higher, sometimes to $5,000 or more.

Any one of these on its own might not mean an upgrade is urgent. A few together usually means the panel is maxed out or aging out.
What actually drives the price
The base panel swap is fairly predictable. What changes the final number is everything around it.
Distance from the meter to the panel. Short runs on an outside wall cost less than long runs through a crawlspace or finished basement.
Open walls versus finished walls. If we can see the studs, wiring is fast. If we have to cut and patch drywall, that adds labor and sometimes a drywall subcontractor.
Amp rating. Moving from 100 amps to 200 amps is the most common upgrade. Going to 400 amps, which some larger homes or shops need, costs more in equipment and wire size.
Utility coordination. Avista and Kootenai Electric both require a service disconnect and reconnect. That means a scheduled outage, sometimes a day or two wait depending on their crew availability, and occasionally a fee for the visit.
Permit and inspection. Bonner and Kootenai counties both require a permit for panel work. That's a flat cost, usually built into your quote, and it protects you if you ever sell the house.
Meter location changes. If the meter has to move, maybe because the old spot is inaccessible or doesn't meet current clearance rules, that's extra conduit, extra labor, and sometimes a new meter base.
Panel upgrades tied to bigger projects
A lot of panel upgrades in this area aren't standalone jobs. They get triggered by something else.
Whole-home generators are common out here, especially for cabin owners and anyone on a well pump who can't afford a long winter outage. Adding a generator usually means a transfer switch or an interlock kit on the panel, plus a dedicated inlet outside. That add-on work runs anywhere from $600 to $2,000 depending on whether you go with a simple interlock or a full automatic transfer switch. If your panel is already at 100 amps and undersized, the generator project is a good time to upgrade it in the same visit and save a second round of permit and inspection fees.
EV chargers are another common trigger. A Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit, and if your panel doesn't have room or capacity, the charger install turns into a panel upgrade first. Same story with hot tubs, shop additions, or a new electric range and dryer added during a remodel.
If you're building new or doing a major addition, you'll likely need a 200-amp panel from the start. That's baked into new construction costs and usually isn't the surprise expense that a retrofit can be in an older home.
Honest tradeoffs
Cheaper isn't always the better deal here. A quote that's noticeably lower than others might be skipping grounding upgrades, using a lower-grade panel, or not accounting for the utility coordination fee until later. Ask what's included: new grounding rods, breaker replacement or reuse, permit cost, and utility disconnect fee.
On the other side, you don't need a 400-amp service for a typical 2,000 square foot home unless you're running a shop, a large well pump, and several big electric appliances all at once. Bigger isn't always necessary. A good electrician will size the panel to your actual and reasonably expected loads, not just sell you the biggest option.
Also worth knowing: an outage during the swap is required by the utility, typically a few hours, sometimes scheduled a week or more out depending on the season. Late fall and early winter tend to be busy for both utilities and electricians because that's when people notice their panel can't handle a new furnace or generator. Booking early helps.
