How Long Does a Panel Upgrade Take in North Idaho?

A straightforward panel upgrade takes one to two days of actual work. But from your first call to a signed-off inspection, plan on two to four weeks. That includes the quote, permit paperwork, scheduling, the install itself, and the final inspection walk-through.
The timeline, step by step
Here's roughly how the process breaks down for a typical home in Bonner or Kootenai county:
Quote and site visit: Usually same week. An electrician looks at your current panel, service size, and meter location.
Permit application: A few days to a week, depending on the county and how busy the building department is.
Utility coordination: If you're changing your service size, the utility has to schedule a disconnect and reconnect. This is often the longest wait, sometimes one to three weeks out.
Install day: Most upgrades take one full day. Bigger jobs, or ones with a relocated panel, can run two days.
Inspection: Scheduled after the work is done, usually within a few days to a week.
Your power is off during the actual swap, typically a few hours, not all day. Your electrician will tell you when to expect that.
What slows things down
Every upgrade has its own quirks. The things that add time and cost are pretty predictable:
Utility scheduling: You don't control when the power company shows up to pull and reset the meter. Rural areas can mean longer waits.
Meter location: If the meter has to move, that's more conduit, more labor, and more coordination.
Distance from panel to service entrance: Longer wire runs mean more time and materials.
Open versus finished walls: Open framing is fast. Finished walls mean cutting, patching, and sometimes drywall repair afterward.
Amp rating jump: Going from 100 amp to 200 amp is common and usually straightforward. Jumping to 400 amp for a large home or shop adds complexity.

Signs you actually need this
Homeowners usually call us for one of a few reasons:
Breakers trip often, even with normal use.
Lights flicker when appliances kick on.
The panel is rated 100 amps and can't handle a modern home's loads.
You're adding a whole-home generator, an EV charger, or new large appliances and the panel doesn't have room.

What it costs

What you can control is getting your permit filed early and having your electrician ready to install as soon as the utility gives a date. Cabin and second-home owners should also plan around access. If the property is remote or seasonal, factor in extra lead time to coordinate a visit.
