Generator Interlock Kit vs. Transfer Switch: What's the Difference?

An interlock kit is a mechanical device that stops your main breaker and generator breaker from being on at the same time, and it costs several hundred dollars installed. A transfer switch is a separate piece of equipment that automatically or manually shifts your whole panel from utility power to generator power, and it runs anywhere from around a thousand dollars to two thousand or more depending on size. Both do the same basic job, which is keeping backfeed from killing a lineworker or frying your generator. They just do it differently, and at different price points.
What an interlock kit actually is
An interlock kit is a small metal or plastic tab that mounts on your existing breaker panel. It physically blocks you from switching on both your main breaker and your generator breaker at once. You run a cord from your generator to an inlet box mounted outside, flip the main off, slide the interlock, flip the generator breaker on, and then manually turn on whichever circuits you want powered.
It is a manual system. You are the transfer switch. That means during an outage you walk outside, start the generator, come back in, and flip breakers in the order that matters. It is not hard, but it does mean a few minutes of hands-on work every time the power goes out, and it means someone needs to be home and able to do it.
What a transfer switch does differently
A transfer switch is its own separate enclosure, usually mounted next to your main panel. It has its own set of breakers for the specific circuits you want backed up, or for the whole panel if you go with a whole-home unit. When utility power drops, you switch the transfer switch to generator mode, or with an automatic transfer switch and a standby generator, it happens on its own within seconds, no cord, no walking outside, no manual breaker flipping.
Automatic transfer switches are what you see paired with whole-home standby generators, the kind that sit outside on a pad and kick on by themselves. Manual transfer switches are cheaper and still require you to flip it over, but you are not touching your main panel breakers directly, and the switch itself is built for the job.
Cost differences, straight numbers
Interlock kit with outdoor inlet: typically several hundred dollars installed, sometimes pushing toward a thousand depending on distance from the panel to where the inlet gets mounted.
Manual transfer switch: usually in the range of a thousand to fifteen hundred dollars installed, more if it is a larger amp rating or the circuits you want backed up are spread across the panel.
Automatic transfer switch paired with a standby generator: often runs close to two thousand dollars just for the switch and its installation, not counting the generator itself.
The biggest cost swings inside any of these numbers come down to the same few things: how far the inlet or switch has to be from your panel, whether we are running wire through open framing or fishing it through finished walls, what amp rating your service is, and whether the town or county requires a permit and inspection, which almost all of Bonner and Kootenai counties do for anything tied into your panel.
Which one fits your situation
If you have a portable generator, run a handful of essential circuits like the well pump, fridge, and a few lights, and you do not mind being the one who flips the switch during a storm, an interlock kit gets the job done for less money. It is a solid choice for a cabin that is not occupied full time, or a homeowner who is comfortable with a bit of hands-on work.
If you want the power to come back on without anyone touching anything, especially if the property is a second home you are not always at, or if you run a small business where an outage means lost inventory or downtime, a transfer switch, particularly an automatic one, is worth the extra cost. Same goes for anyone who is not physically able to get outside and manage a generator hookup during a bad ice storm at two in the morning, which happens more than you would think up here.
Panel condition matters more than people expect
Before you decide between the two, it is worth checking whether your existing panel can even handle either option well. Frequent breaker trips, flickering lights when appliances kick on, or a 100-amp panel trying to run a modern home with an EV charger, a heat pump, and a few smart appliances are all signs the panel itself needs attention first. Adding a whole-home generator or a bigger transfer switch to an already maxed-out panel just moves the bottleneck somewhere else.
A panel upgrade in this area typically runs a low few thousand dollars, and the price depends on your service size, where your meter is located, and how much coordination is needed with the utility company. If you are already planning a generator setup, it is worth having someone look at the panel at the same time, since running two projects back to back usually costs more than doing them together.
Permits and inspection, do not skip this
Both interlock kits and transfer switches involve tying new equipment into your main electrical system, and both require a permit and inspection in Bonner and Kootenai counties. This is not optional paperwork. An interlock kit that is not on the panel manufacturer's approved list can get flagged by an inspector, and a transfer switch installed without a permit can create real problems if you ever sell the house or file an insurance claim after storm damage.
