Generator Interlock Cost Breakdown: From a Few Hundred to a Couple Thousand

A generator interlock kit alone can cost a few hundred dollars. A full installation with a transfer setup, permit and inspection can run close to two thousand. The spread comes down to how far your panel is from where the generator will sit, whether your walls are open or finished, and what size system you're running.
The short answer: most North Idaho homeowners land somewhere between $600 and $1,800 for a straightforward interlock installation on an existing panel. Add a power inlet box outside, a longer wire run, or a panel that's already crowded, and you move toward the higher end.
What You're Actually Paying For
An interlock isn't just a metal bracket. A typical job includes:
The interlock kit itself, matched to your panel brand and amp rating (often $50 to $150 for parts)
A power inlet box mounted outside your home, where you plug in the generator
Wire and conduit running from that inlet to your panel
Labor to install, wire, and test the system
A permit and inspection, which is required in Bonner and Kootenai counties

An uninspected interlock can cause problems at resale, with insurance, or if something goes wrong and it turns out the work wasn't up to code.
Why Prices Swing So Much
Four things move the number up or down more than anything else:
Distance from panel to generator location. If your panel is on an exterior wall near where the generator will sit, the wire run is short and cheap. If the panel is in a basement and the generator needs to be 20 feet away on the other side of the house, you're paying for a lot more conduit and labor.
Open walls vs. finished walls. Running wire through an open crawlspace or unfinished basement is fast. Running it through finished drywall, tile, or a finished ceiling means cutting, fishing wire, and patching afterward. That alone can add several hundred dollars.
Amp rating of your system. A small portable generator feeding a 30-amp inlet is cheaper to wire than a whole-home setup feeding a 50-amp or 200-amp service. Bigger amp ratings mean heavier wire, bigger breakers, and sometimes a bigger inlet box.
Permit and inspection fees. These vary by county and jurisdiction, but budget somewhere in the low hundreds. It's a small piece of the total but it's not optional.
When an Interlock Isn't Enough
An interlock works fine for a lot of homes, but it has limits. It requires you to manually flip breakers and plug in the generator every time the power goes out. If you want the system to switch over automatically, or if you're running a whole-home generator instead of a portable one, you need an automatic transfer switch instead. That's a different job with different costs, usually higher than an interlock.
There's also the question of whether your panel can even handle what you're asking it to do. If you've noticed breakers tripping more often, lights flickering when the fridge or well pump kicks on, or you're still running a 100-amp panel in a house with modern appliances, electric heat, or a plan to add an EV charger, the interlock might be the smaller problem. A panel upgrade often runs in the low thousands depending on service size, where your meter sits, and how much coordination is needed with your utility. It's worth having that conversation before you spend money on a generator setup that a maxed-out panel can't really support.
