Flickering Lights and Tripping Breakers: When to Call an Electrician

If your lights flicker when the fridge kicks on, or a breaker trips more than once a month, stop guessing and call an electrician. Those two symptoms together usually mean your panel is overloaded or wiring is failing somewhere behind the walls. Waiting on this stuff doesn't save money. It just increases the chance of a bigger repair or a fire.
Flickering lights: normal or warning sign?
A little flicker when a big appliance starts up, like a well pump or air compressor, can be normal. Motors pull extra current for a second on startup, and that dip shows up as a flicker. That's usually not an emergency.
What's not normal:
Lights flickering with no clear cause, even when nothing big is running
Flickering that gets worse over weeks or months
Lights dimming in one room while another room is fine
Buzzing or warm switch plates along with the flicker
These point to loose connections, an overloaded circuit, or a failing panel component. In older Bonner and Kootenai County homes, we also see original wiring that's just tired after 40 or 50 years. Insulation gets brittle, connections loosen with heat cycling, and the system starts showing it in small ways before it fails outright.
Tripping breakers: how often is too often
Every breaker trips once in a while. That's the breaker doing its job. The problem is frequency and pattern.
Once every few months, same circuit, same appliance: probably just that circuit is maxed out. Move some load off it.
Multiple times a week: something's wrong. Could be a bad breaker, a short, or a circuit carrying more than it's rated for.
Trips when you plug in something new, like a space heater or a shop tool: your panel may not have the capacity for modern loads.
A lot of homes in this area still have 100-amp panels from decades ago. That was fine when houses had a furnace, a stove, and a TV. It's not fine once you add central air, an EV charger, a hot tub, and a couple space heaters for the shop or cabin. The panel wasn't built for that load, and it tells you so by tripping.
Signs you need a panel upgrade
Frequent breaker trips across different circuits, not just one
Flickering lights that show up with no obvious cause
A 100-amp panel and you're adding an EV charger, generator, or major appliance
Panel is more than 25 to 30 years old
You see rust, scorch marks, or a burning smell near the panel
Breakers feel warm to the touch
Any one of these on its own might wait a few weeks for a scheduled visit. Scorch marks, burning smell, or warm breakers mean call today, not next week.
What a panel upgrade actually costs
For most homes in North Idaho, a panel upgrade runs in the low thousands. The exact number depends on a few things:
Service size: upgrading from 100-amp to 200-amp costs more than a straight swap of a failing panel at the same amperage.
Meter location: if the meter has to move or the service entrance needs work, that adds labor.
Utility coordination: your power company has to disconnect and reconnect service. Scheduling that can add a few days to the timeline, and in rural areas around Sagle or up toward Priest Lake it sometimes takes longer.
Permit and inspection: panel work requires a permit in Idaho. That's not optional, and it's built into the quote.
Nobody likes hearing "it depends," but with panel work it's honest. A straightforward swap in an accessible spot costs less than a full service upgrade that requires trenching, new conduit, or meter relocation.
Generators, EV chargers, and other triggers
A lot of upgrade calls start with a specific project, not a failure. Common triggers:
Whole-home generators: these need a transfer switch so the generator and utility power never feed the system at the same time. That's a safety requirement, not a suggestion.
Generator inlets and interlock kits: a simpler setup than a full transfer switch, running from several hundred dollars up to around two thousand depending on panel access and distance to the inlet location.
EV chargers: most Level 2 chargers need a dedicated 240-volt circuit, and if the panel is already full, that means an upgrade first.
Cost drivers for these smaller projects follow the same pattern as panel work: distance from the panel to the new device, whether walls are open or finished, amp rating needed, and permit and inspection requirements. A generator inlet installed six feet from the panel in an unfinished basement costs a lot less than one routed through finished walls to an exterior wall thirty feet away.
What to do right now
If you've got frequent trips, unexplained flickering, or any smell of burning near your panel, don't wait for the next inspection cycle. Turn off the circuit if you can do so safely, and get someone out to look at it.
