EV Charger Installation Cost for North Idaho Homes

A basic EV charger installation runs $600 to $1,500 if your electrical panel already has room. If your panel needs an upgrade too, expect $2,500 to $4,500 total, sometimes more depending on your utility connection. Here is how those numbers break down and what pushes them up or down.

What a straightforward install looks like

Most Level 2 home chargers need a dedicated 240-volt circuit, usually 40 to 60 amps. If your panel has open breaker slots and enough capacity, an electrician runs new wire from the panel to the charger location, installs a breaker, and mounts the charger. That is it. For a garage charger close to the panel, on an open wall, this is often a half-day job.

  • Short run, open wall: $600 to $900

  • Longer run or finished walls: $900 to $1,500

  • Permit and inspection fee: usually $100 to $250, added to the job

What drives the price up

Distance from the panel to the charger is the biggest factor. Every extra 10 to 15 feet of wire, especially through finished walls, framing, or crawl spaces, adds labor. Fishing wire through drywall costs more than running it along an open garage wall. If the charger goes on a detached shop or second building, you are looking at trenching for underground conduit, which adds $1,000 or more depending on distance and soil conditions common in Bonner and Kootenai counties.

Amp rating matters too. A 60-amp circuit needs heavier wire than a 40-amp one, and heavier wire costs more per foot. If you want the option to add a second charger later, running larger conduit now, even if you don't pull all the wire, can save money down the road.

When you need a panel upgrade

A lot of North Idaho homes, especially older ones and cabins built decades ago, still run 100-amp panels. Adding an EV charger to a 100-amp panel that is already running a well pump, electric range, and baseboard heat can push you over capacity. Signs you need an upgrade before the charger goes in:

  • Breakers trip frequently, especially when running multiple appliances

  • Lights flicker or dim when the well pump or range kicks on

  • Your panel is rated 100 amps and you're adding a charger, generator, or new appliance

  • The panel is old enough that your electrician can't find open slots for new breakers

A panel upgrade to 200 amps typically costs a few thousand dollars, depending on service size, where your meter is located, and how much coordination with the utility is needed. In some cases the utility has to upgrade the service drop or transformer too, which adds time but usually not much cost to you directly. Expect the whole panel upgrade, permit included, to land in the $2,500 to $4,000 range for most homes, more if the meter location requires relocation or the service entrance needs replacing.

Honest tradeoffs

You can install a cheaper 120-volt "trickle charge" setup using a standard outlet, but it adds range slowly, often 3 to 5 miles per hour of charging. Most people regret going this route once they're driving daily. A proper 240-volt Level 2 setup costs more upfront but charges 5 to 8 times faster and holds up better long term.

If your panel is borderline, you have two choices: upgrade now, or install a smaller circuit and skip some other electrical load. Neither is wrong, but skipping the panel upgrade to save money now often means paying for it later anyway when you add a second EV, a generator, or a hot tub. If you're already planning for a whole-home generator, it makes sense to handle both projects in the same panel upgrade instead of doing it twice.

Permits and inspection

Bonner and Kootenai counties both require permits for new circuits and panel work. This isn't optional and it isn't just paperwork. Inspections catch wiring mistakes before they become fire hazards or insurance problems. Permit and inspection fees are usually rolled into your quote, so ask upfront if they're included or separate.

Getting a real number for your home
