Common Electrical Wiring Mistakes in North Idaho Cabins and Second Homes

The most common wiring mistakes in North Idaho cabins are undersized panels, DIY splices from past owners, rodent damage from seasonal vacancy, and generator hookups done without a transfer switch. Any one of these can mean a breaker that won't stop tripping, a dead outlet you find on the first weekend of the season, or a fire hazard hiding behind drywall. Here's what we see most and what it costs to fix right.

Undersized or Outdated Panels

A lot of cabins built in the 1980s and 90s still run on 100-amp panels. That was fine when the place had a fridge, some lights, and a well pump. Add a hot tub, an EV charger, electric heat, or a whole-home generator, and 100 amps runs out fast. Signs you're maxed out: breakers that trip when you run the microwave and space heater at once, lights that flicker when the well pump kicks on, or a panel that's already full of double-tapped breakers.

A panel upgrade to 200 amps typically runs in the low thousands. The exact number depends on your service size, where your meter is located, and how much coordination is needed with your utility. If the utility needs to upgrade the drop or transformer too, that adds time and sometimes cost on their end, not yours.

DIY Wiring From Past Owners

Cabins change hands a lot, and every owner adds something. We regularly find wiring done by someone's brother-in-law twenty years ago: wire nuts with no junction box, romex stapled directly to exposed studs in a way that violates code, or a whole addition wired with the wrong gauge wire for the breaker size. None of this shows up until an inspection, an insurance claim, or a fire. If you're buying a second home or inheriting one, it's worth having someone open up the panel and check a few outlets before you assume everything's fine.

Rodent and Moisture Damage

Seasonal properties sit empty for months. Mice and squirrels get into wall cavities and attics and chew on wire insulation. Moisture gets into outdoor boxes that weren't rated for wet locations. Both problems are invisible until something stops working or a breaker starts tripping for no obvious reason. If your cabin sits vacant more than a few weeks at a time, a seasonal check of exposed wiring in the attic and crawlspace is cheap insurance against a much bigger repair.

Generators Wired Wrong

This is one of the biggest safety issues we see in North Idaho cabins. Someone runs an extension cord from a portable generator through a window, or worse, backfeeds the panel through a dryer outlet. That can energize the utility lines and put a lineworker at risk, not to mention it's a fire hazard in your own walls.

The fix is a proper generator inlet with an interlock device or a transfer switch. Cost usually runs from several hundred dollars up to a couple thousand, depending on the distance from the inlet to the panel, whether your walls are open or already finished, the amp rating of the system, and permit and inspection fees. Missing GFCI and AFCI Protection

Older cabins often skip GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor outlets, and AFCI protection in bedrooms and living areas. Current code requires both in most living spaces. This isn't just a paperwork issue. GFCI protection is what keeps someone from getting shocked near water, and AFCI protection catches the kind of arcing that starts electrical fires inside walls. If your panel was last updated before the mid-2000s, there's a good chance this protection is missing.

Extension Cords as Permanent Wiring

We see this constantly in bunkhouses, sheds, and additions: an extension cord run through a wall or under a door to power a space heater, a mini fridge, or shop equipment. Cords aren't rated for that kind of continuous, hidden use. They overheat, and they're not protected by the same breaker sizing as fixed wiring. If you need power in a spot that doesn't have an outlet, the fix is a proper circuit, not a longer cord.

What This Means for Your Property

  • Get your panel checked if it's 100 amps and you're adding any major appliance, EV charger, or generator.

  • Have a seasonal inspection if the property sits vacant for stretches, especially before you close it up for winter.

  • Never backfeed a generator through a dryer outlet. Use a proper inlet and transfer switch or interlock.

  • Assume any wiring done without a permit needs a second look, especially in additions and outbuildings.
