Cabin Electrical Checklist: Preparing Your North Idaho Second Home for Winter

Before you close up the cabin for winter, walk the electrical panel, test your generator setup if you have one, and confirm every heat trace cable and sump pump is wired to a circuit that can handle the load. Most cabin electrical failures in North Idaho happen because something small got skipped in the fall and nobody found out until a pipe froze in January.

Here is the checklist, in the order it matters most.

1. Check the panel for warning signs

If breakers trip often, lights flicker when the well pump or fridge kicks on, or you still have a 100-amp panel from a cabin built in the 80s, that panel is telling you something. Older second homes in Bonner and Kootenai counties were never wired for today's loads: heat tape, mini-splits, EV chargers, hot tubs. A panel upgrade typically runs in the low thousands of dollars, depending on service size, where the meter sits, and how much coordination is needed with the utility. It is not a cheap fix, but a panel that cannot keep up is a fire risk sitting in an empty building all winter.

  • Frequent breaker trips, especially on the same circuit

  • Flickering or dimming lights when appliances start up

  • A panel rated 100 amps or less with modern electric heat, well pump, and appliances

  • Warm or discolored breaker switches

If you plan to add a whole-home generator, EV charger, or bigger appliances next year, it is worth pricing the panel upgrade now instead of mid-crisis.

2. Test the generator setup before you need it

A generator that has not run since last spring is a gamble. Start it, let it run under load for 15 to 20 minutes, and confirm the transfer switch or interlock actually switches power the way it should. If you do not have a transfer setup yet, a generator inlet with an interlock kit usually runs several hundred dollars up to around two thousand, depending on distance from the panel, whether the walls are open or finished, the amp rating of the panel, and permit and inspection requirements. 3. Confirm heat tape and freeze protection are wired correctly

Heat tape on exposed pipes, well lines, and gutters needs its own dedicated circuit, not a shared outlet with the porch light. Check that:

  • Heat tape is plugged into a GFCI-protected outlet rated for outdoor or continuous use

  • The thermostat or sensor on the heat tape is working, not just the cable

  • Sump pump and well pump circuits are separate from anything else that could overload

  • Any extension cords are rated for outdoor, cold-weather use, and none are duct-taped together as a permanent fix

4. Decide what stays on and what gets shut down

If nobody will be at the cabin for weeks at a time, decide ahead of time what needs power and what does not. Water heaters, well pumps, and heat tape usually stay on. Non-essential circuits like hot tubs, shop equipment, or seasonal lighting can often be shut off at the breaker to reduce risk. Label the panel clearly before you leave, so anyone checking on the property, a neighbor, a caretaker, or a plumber, knows what is live and what is not.

5. Walk the property for exterior issues

Snow load and freeze-thaw cycles are hard on outdoor electrical. Look for:

  • Loose or sagging service drop wires from the pole to the house

  • Cracked or gapped outdoor outlet covers letting moisture in

  • Exposed wiring near the meter base or where snow piles up against the house

  • Any burn marks or corrosion around outdoor panels or disconnects

None of these are complicated fixes, but they are easy to miss on a quick walkthrough before you lock up for the season.

6. Know when to call someone

A DIY-minded homeowner can handle the visual checks and basic generator test. Panel work, transfer switch installs, and anything involving the meter base should go to a licensed electrician, both for safety and because the utility often requires coordination for panel changes.
