Adding a Home Office? Why Your Panel May Need an Upgrade First

If your panel is 100 amps or smaller and you're adding a home office with a computer, monitors, a space heater, and maybe a mini-fridge, you probably need a panel upgrade before you add circuits. Most older North Idaho homes and cabins were built with 100-amp service. That was plenty for lights and a furnace blower in 1985. It's tight now once you stack in modern electronics, an EV charger, or a heat pump.
Signs your panel is already maxed out
You don't need to guess. The panel usually tells you before it fails outright.
Breakers trip when you run a space heater and a microwave at the same time
Lights flicker or dim when the well pump or furnace kicks on
Your panel is labeled 100 amp and was installed before 2000
You've already added a hot tub, shop, or second fridge since moving in
The panel is full, no open slots for new breakers
Any one of these on its own might be manageable. Two or three together, especially with a home office addition on top, usually means it's time to upsize.
Why a home office changes the math
A home office doesn't look like a big load on paper. A desktop, two monitors, a printer, and a space heater might pull 1,500 to 2,000 watts. That's not the problem by itself. The problem is what it's added to. Most 100-amp panels in older homes are already running close to capacity once you count electric heat, a water heater, kitchen appliances, and a well pump. Add a dedicated office circuit and a space heater in a cold Sagle winter, and that panel gets stressed fast.
Builders and remodelers see this constantly. A client wants a simple addition, an extra 15-amp circuit for outlets and a heater. But when the electrician opens the panel, there's no room and no capacity. What started as a one-day job turns into a panel upgrade first, then the office wiring second.
What a panel upgrade actually costs
In North Idaho, a straightforward panel upgrade runs in the low thousands of dollars. The exact number depends on a few things:
Service size. Going from 100 amp to 200 amp costs more than a like-for-like swap, since it often means new service entrance cable too
Meter location. If the meter needs to move or the utility has to reset service, that adds cost and scheduling time
Utility coordination. Avista or your local co-op has to disconnect and reconnect power, which means a scheduled outage window
Permit and inspection. Bonner and Kootenai county jurisdictions both require permits for panel work, and that's not a step to skip

Do you need 200 amp, or will 150 work?
Not every home office triggers a full jump to 200 amp service. If your panel is already 150 amp and mostly empty, you might just need new breaker space, not a full service upgrade. But if you're at 100 amp and you're also planning an EV charger, a whole-home generator, or an electric range down the road, it makes sense to size up once rather than pay for two separate jobs. Think about the next five years, not just the office addition in front of you.
Other loads that push people over the edge
A home office is often the addition that finally forces the panel question, but it's rarely the only load driving the decision. Common triggers we see together:
A whole-home standby generator, which needs its own transfer switch or interlock and dedicated capacity
An EV charger, which typically wants a 40 to 60 amp dedicated circuit
A converted garage or shop with heat and tools
Upgrading from a wood stove to electric heat in part of the house
If a generator is part of your plans too, a manual transfer switch or interlock kit generally runs several hundred to around two thousand dollars depending on your setup, and it's worth planning that alongside the panel work rather than paying for two separate service calls. Cost drivers worth asking about
When you get a quote, the number can vary a lot based on details that aren't obvious from the outside:
Distance from the panel to the new office space
Whether walls are open or finished, since finished walls mean more labor to fish wire
The amp rating you're upgrading to
Permit and inspection fees, which vary by county
Ask your electrician to walk through each of these before you commit to a number. A rough phone quote without seeing the panel and the space isn't worth much either way.
Getting a straight answer for your situation
